A Rome Jewellery masterclass | A bespoke course held in collaboration with IGI Shanghai

Daniela recently held a highly successful bespoke course in Rome with IGI (International Gemological Institute) Shanghai.

Daniela, in conjunction with specialist and author Amanda Triossi, created a programme for a small group of young Chinese jewellery enthusiasts keen to explore Rome’s history as a critical centre for the production of jewels in the 19th and 20th centuries.

With their shared passion for jewellery history, research and authorship, Daniela and Amanda’s aim was to provide sound academic information delivered through illuminating lectures combined with privileged access to private jewellery collections, galleries and high-profile jewellery houses. Rome’s irresistible views and world class cuisine provided numerous well-deserved diversions away from the studies.

The course ran for three days and a particular focus for the group’s study was the renowned Roman tradition for intaglios, cameos, micro mosaics and archaeological revival jewels. At Antichità Alberto Di Castro, an historic gallery founded in 1878 and located in Piazza di Spagna, and at Eleuetri, a gallery specialising in antique and vintage jewellery, located in Via dei Condotti , such antique pieces were viewed alongside jewels by Castellani. A trip was also made to the National Etruscan Museum, at Villa Giulia, where pre-Roman antiquities from the Etruscan Civilisation are displayed; the Museum is also the home of the Castellani Collection.

The itinerary featured visits to Casa Petochi, to meet with a number of individuals involved with jewellery and the arts in Rome and Lucia Odescalchi, to view contemporary Italian fashion jewellery.

Rome is of course the base for the influential, world-famous jewellery house, Bulgari, and on the final day of the course the group visited Bulgari’s flagship boutique on Via dei Condotti, guided by Ghislain Aucreman, Head of Bulgari’s Historical Archive, who shared a selection of Bulgari’s creations dating from the past 130 years, and by Sergio Scudellari who introduced the group to some of the stunning creations from their most recent High Jewellery collection.

Commenting on this inaugural course and partnership, Scott Tang of IGI Shanghai said ‘…we are very excited about the future of our collaboration…we believe there is tremendous potential to bring more specialised jewellery knowledge to collectors, professionals and enthusiasts across Asia’.
