In 1925 Paris hosted the influential Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, where ‘moderne’ design, characterised by geometric forms, bold colours, elegance and luxury was promoted across architecture, interior design, decorative arts, furniture and jewellery. The new style became known as Art Deco, an abbreviation of Arts Décoratifs – French for decorative arts – and it bridged the gap between Art Nouveau and the sleek machine-made world of modernism. Thereafter the look of jewellery was to change dramatically.
