It is unusual for suites of bangles like this to remain intact as often the individual bangles were gifted to members of the family with the passing of the years.
Five gold rope twist bangle bracelets by Cartier, circa 1950
We find this set of five Cartier bangles dating back to the 1950s irresistible.
Gold wire, twisted or plaited around a gold bangle or a rigid bracelet, along with the bangle in the form of a twisted rope, are recurring designs seen in the earliest of jewels from cultures all over the world.
Although created in the 1950s when they would have perfectly complemented the day time pencil skirt, pearls and cashmere twin-set of the era, these gold rope twist bangles are perennially modern and glamorous. Worn now with a crisp white linen shirt and jeans by day or a luxurious silk blouse and palazzo pants by night, they retain the free spirit and dynamism seen in fashion and jewellery in the second half of the 20th century.
